Navigating Your Options: Medicare Advantage & Part D Plan Termination

Understanding Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment Periods

Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) provide opportunities to make changes to your Medicare coverage. Knowing the difference between these periods is crucial for understanding your options when your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan ends.

Fall Open Enrollment

Fall Open Enrollment occurs annually from October 15 to December 7. During this time, you can:

  1. Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
  2. Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare.
  3. Change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
  4. Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan.

Changes made during Fall Open Enrollment take effect on January 1 of the following year.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for Plan Termination – December 8 to February 28

A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is available for those who need to make changes to their Medicare coverage outside of the standard enrollment periods. From December 8 to February 28, 2024, you may be eligible for an SEP if your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan is ending at the close of the year. This allows you to make necessary adjustments to your coverage to ensure continuous healthcare access.

This specific SEP is triggered when:

  1. Your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan is ending its contract with Medicare at the end of the year.
  2. Your plan will no longer be available in your area.

During this SEP, you can:

  1. Enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan that is available in your area.
  2. Switch to Original Medicare and, if desired, enroll in a standalone Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.
  3. If you return to Original Medicare, consider enrolling in a Medigap policy to help cover out-of-pocket expenses not covered by Original Medicare.

It’s crucial to understand the details of your SEP eligibility and act promptly to secure your healthcare coverage for the upcoming year. Plan Medicare can provide guidance on your eligibility and help you make the best choices for your healthcare needs.
